La Quinta Resort & Club

The chicken-and-the-egg question that people often ask at La Quinta Resort & Club is which came first: the city of La Quinta or the Resort? The truth is neither. The Spaniards came through the area in the 1500s and they created a “fifth stop” base on the way to the San Gabriel Mission. The words “la quinta” are Spanish, translating to “the fifth”. More specifically, the word “quinta” is known in Mexico as a type of hacienda.

Hundreds of years later in the 1920s, along came San Francisco businessman Walter Morgan, who chose to build his La Quinta Hotel (renamed La Quinta Resort & Club in 1993) pretty much where the Spaniards had their base. It was much later that the City of La Quinta was named for the Resort.

It took the personal vision of Walter Morgan to recognize the potential in the region. Not only did he understand that the Coachella Valley (where La Quinta and Palm Springs California are located) was incredibly convenient to the developing metropolis of Los Angeles, but he also appreciated the natural beauty of the area too.

Morgan’s idea was a huge hit and soon the world’s first movie stars were heading to the La Quinta as a sort of secret retreat. Their secret did not remain so for very long and it was by the 1930s and 1940s that most of Hollywood’s biggest names were making their own visits to the area. They discovered the glorious weather and some took the initiative to begin developing the first golf courses, tennis courts and residential communities in the region.

All of these popular past times are still the “mainstays” of the La Quinta Resort & Club, but the facility itself has expanded dramatically. Today you will find a massive 42-acre collection of casitas, golf courses, swimming pools and tennis courts. Charming Spanish architecture and abundant vegetation weave a colorful tapestry against the mountain backdrop, making La Quinta Resort & Club one of the prettiest resorts you’ll find anywhere in the world.

People now travel to the La Quinta Resort & Club for much more than a bit of fun in the California sun. They go for the world-class and award-winning spa, to dine in the gourmet restaurants and cafes, to stay in one of the impressive rooms or even a private residence, and to spend a day shopping in the upscale and incredibly unique boutiques and shops located directly on the grounds.

Tennis Facilities At La Quinta Resort & Club Are World-Class.

Golf can be enjoyed on two different courses, both of which were designed by legendary golf course designer Pete Dye, plus guests are also welcome at the nearby PGA West golf courses as well. There are also opportunities for golf lessons at the renowned Jim McLean Golf School, which is located on-site.

Tennis players are certainly not ignored. With 23 courts – grass, clay and hard surface – the La Quinta Resort has become very popular for those who simply want to improve their tennis game. Many of the courts are lighted, so players can manage the La Quinta heat by playing after sunset. Players can also enjoy a range of clinics and opportunities to sit in on regional, national, and international competitions from time to time as well.

Another major draw at La Quinta Resort & Club is Spa La Quinta, where guests are offered many treatments borrowed from the area’s native ancestors. One of the top spa resorts in Southern California, La Quinta Resort puts emphasis on outdoor spa treatments under the desert sky to add to the relaxation and serenity of the experience.

There are also plenty of opportunities for a visitor to simply stroll the spectacularly landscaped grounds in order to take in the surrounding mountain views and the ever-present sun that shines down on the La Quinta Resort & Club at least 350 days each year!
